How to Play Guess The Trope

The free multiplayer movie night card game. Draft tropes, watch the film, pitch your hits — the group votes.

Wait… what's a trope?

A trope is one of those classic storytelling patterns that keeps popping up across movies, TV shows, and books. You know them the moment you see them:

  • The hero who turns out to be the villain's long-lost relative
  • The side character who dies right after mentioning their retirement
  • The couple who argue the whole movie… and fall in love at the end

Every movie lover has spotted these patterns. Now it's time to score points for it.

How do you play?

Simple. Grab some friends, find a movie nobody has seen (yes, that means keeping an eye on the one who "definitely hasn't seen it"), and let the games begin.

  1. Pick a movie

Preferably one your group hasn't seen — the less everyone knows, the more fun.

  2. Start a game & share the room code

Get everyone into the lobby with a 4-letter code or QR before you hit play.

  3. Draft your trope cards

Each player picks a hand of trope cards they think will show up in the movie. Choose wisely — your opponents are going for the same ones.

  4. Watch & take notes

Press play. When a moment matches one of your tropes, jot down what happened — you'll use it to make your case after the credits.

  5. Pitch your tropes & vote

Players take turns presenting one trope and the moment they think it hit. The rest of the group votes hit or miss — each trope scores one point if it lands.

More than just a game

Guess The Trope turns a regular movie night into a hilarious showdown of film knowledge, gut instinct, and a little bit of bluffing. Build rivalries. Track your record. Become the undisputed trope master of your friend group.
